William B. Hatcher papers, 1928-1947 (bulk 1941-1946).

The William B. Hatcher Papers consist of office files with correspondence and other personal and administrative records from Hatcher's tenure as LSU President, administrator, and History Department faculty member from 1936 to 1947. The collection also contains earlier materials from his time as Superintendent of East Baton Rouge Parish Schools. Included are letters, memoranda, speeches, course papers, newspaper clippings, book reviews, and photographs documenting his career as an educator and status as an influential member of the community during the World War II era. Notable correspondents include Jimmie H. Davis and G.B. Erskine.

William Bass Hatcher was born in Ripley, Mississippi, on December 12, 1888. He spent his early years in Texas and Louisiana. His parents were both educators and Hatcher began teaching grade school in 1908 after completing high school at the age of 15.
